Deputy Sheriff Walker LeMay was shot and killed during a welfare check in Wister, at a home off Highway 270, at approximately 11:00 a.m.
On April 19, officers from the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, the Wister Police Department, and the U.S. Forestry Department were called to assist with a welfare check at a residence. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire; when the officers returned fire, the suspect retreated into the residence and barricaded himself inside. During the exchange of gunfire, Deputy Sheriff LeMay and the Wister Chief of Police were struck. Deputy Sheriff LeMay was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Wister Chief of Police was moved to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
After several hours and the response of additional agencies, including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the suspect surrendered and was treated for minor injuries, then taken into custody. He has been charged with murder in the first degree, 8 counts of shooting with intent to kill, and use of an incendiary device.
Deputy LeMay previously served with the Heavener Police Department for four years. Survivors include his daughter, mother, stepfather, father, three sisters, and two brothers.
