Deputy Sheriff Burlie Duvall was killed at a crash scene on Route 460 west of Cabin Field Road, in Campbell County, at approximately 5:33 p.m.

He and another deputy were returning to Appomattox County from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy when they encountered a crash in the roadway. They activated their emergency lights and parked in the left lane to assist at the scene. An approaching tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the emergency vehicles and struck Deputy Duvall. Deputy Duvall died at the scene.

Seven additional people were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Duvall had served with the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office for only two months. He had previously served with the Prince George’s County, Maryland, Department of Corrections. He is survived by his wife, three children, nine siblings, parents, maternal grandparents, and nine nieces and nephews.
