Deputy United States Marshal Drew Hanson was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant for a fugitive on Rutland Road in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Around 3:00 p.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force and deputies with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office were attempting to arrest a man wanted for sexual battery. When deputies entered the home, they found the suspect barricaded in a bedroom. He fired at officers, striking Deputy Marshal Hanson.
The suspect, who had failed to appear in court, was apprehended after a three-hour standoff.
Deputy Marshal Hanson had served with the United States Department of Justice – United States Marshals Service for six years. He previously served with the U.S Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Police Department, the Mississippi Department of Transportation, and the Gulfport Police Department. Survivors include his wife and two children.
