Auxiliary Police Officer Ricardo Davis suffered fatal injuries when he fell from the Poplar Street Bridge, in East St. Louis, during a foot pursuit of a suspect at approximately 5:00 pm.
He had attempted to stop a vehicle in Washington Park but the vehicle fled and lead him on a pursuit along I-64 through East St. Louis. The driver of the vehicle crashed on the Poplar Street Bridge and both occupants attempted to flee on foot just prior to crossing into Missouri.
Officer Davis pursued one of the occupants on foot but fell over a barrier separating two spans of the bridge, falling approximately 50 feet to the ground below. He was transported to a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Both subjects were taken into custody.
Officer Davis had previously served with the Brooklyn Police Department. He is survived by two brothers, who serve with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.
